What to take when collecting a car

You do not need a boot full of equipment. The useful things are those that confirm the transaction, help you complete the legal steps and make the first journey safer.

Vehicle paperwork, keys and phone being checked inside a parked car

Documents and information

  • Driving licence and any identification agreed with the seller or auction.
  • Payment details and a copy of the advert or order.
  • Insurance confirmation and the provider’s contact details.
  • Seller’s address, collection reference and receipt wording.
  • The registration number and route details.
  • A pen and a way to photograph the condition and mileage.

Simple practical items

A charged phone, charging cable, torch, tyre-pressure gauge and weatherproof coat can be useful. For a long journey, take water and plan a break. If the car has an unusual charging connector, security key or locking-wheel nut, check these are present rather than trying to supply your own.

What should come with the car

Expect all agreed keys, the green new keeper slip, sales invoice or receipt, handbook, service record and documents for any warranty. Ask for the locking-wheel key, parcel shelf, charging cables and detachable accessories included in the sale.

Photograph the mileage and general condition at handover, particularly if a dealer is delivering the vehicle.

Arrange the insurance before you set out

It is easier to resolve an eligibility or payment problem at home than beside a car you cannot legally drive.
