When to transport a car instead of driving it

Driving home is not always the right answer. Transport becomes the practical option when the legal paperwork or the vehicle’s condition is uncertain.

Good reasons to arrange transport

  • The vehicle has no valid MOT and is not being driven to a qualifying pre-booked test.
  • It cannot be taxed before collection.
  • No suitable insurance is available for the driver or vehicle.
  • Tyres, brakes, steering, lights or another safety-critical item are doubtful.
  • The car is a non-runner, restoration project or has stood unused for a long period.
  • You are not comfortable making the journey in an unfamiliar vehicle.

Ask what the quote includes

Give the transporter accurate dimensions, location and condition. Say whether the car rolls, steers and brakes and whether access is tight. Confirm collection and delivery windows, insurance arrangements and what happens if the vehicle cannot be loaded as described.

Use a genuine business and keep the written agreement.

Do not confuse recovery with ordinary transport

Breakdown membership bought after a fault occurs may not cover collection of a newly purchased, already-unroadworthy vehicle. Read the terms before relying on it. A planned transporter is often clearer.

If you can make the car roadworthy and complete the legal arrangements, driving may still be reasonable. Insurance is only one part of that decision.

If the car is roadworthy and you only need cover

Check whether a short-term policy is available for the driver, vehicle and journey.
