Check the record yourself
Use the free GOV.UK MOT status service with the registration number. The history can also reveal recurring advisories and mileage entries. Check that the vehicle shown matches the one you are buying.
A paper certificate is not essential evidence and can be out of date. The online record is the useful starting point.
The pre-booked test exception is narrow
A vehicle without a current MOT may be driven to a pre-arranged MOT test in certain circumstances, or away from a test to a place of repair following failure. That does not mean an untaxed, uninsured or unroadworthy car can be driven normally. You still need suitable insurance, and the vehicle must be roadworthy.
“I was going to book a test later” is not the same as travelling to a genuinely pre-booked appointment.
A valid MOT does not guarantee today’s condition
An MOT shows that the vehicle met the test requirements at the time of inspection. A tyre may have been damaged since, a light may have failed or a mechanical fault may have developed. The driver remains responsible for roadworthiness.
Make a basic check before a long journey. If the car has serious warning lights, unsafe tyres, poor brakes or another obvious defect, arrange transport.
MOT in order but insurance still needed?
Short-term cover may be one option for the collection journey. Check the quotation and policy rather than assuming you qualify.
